Why is everyone afraid of the Internet

I think it is kinda dumb, how even in small towns, it's like everybody is afraid of everyone else...  People should make use of the Internet, instead of being afraid of people they don't know...  I think everyone who gets involved online, instead of being paranoid, would realize that 90% of people that go online isn't running an online scam..
